Ribble Valley & White Rose Ladies, Relay For Life Raised £126,000
I was delighted to accept an invitation to officially open the 2010 “Relay for Life” fundraising initiative, which was organised by the Ribble Valley & White Rose Ladies (RV&WRL). I was very impressed when they announced that they had been successful in raising over £126,000 in total. This was the result of a well-planned, perfectly coordinated and immaculately delivered initiative in aid of the UK Cancers Research for Children.
32 Relay for Life teams were recruited by the RV&WRL committee and each team raised funds via the most diverse and inventive methods imaginable. Some walked the Coast to Coast, climbed the Three Peaks and undertook sponsored skydives. Other teams created recipe books, held coffee mornings, concerts, discos, ‘pie parties’, pamper days, accessory sales, book sales, pub quizzes, ‘mile of pennies’ challenge and bucket collections to name just a few of the methods undertaken to boost funds.
Relay for Life is essentially about signing up teams to raise funds for a 12 month period culminating in a 24 hour nonstop event at which all the teams take to the running/walking track for 24 hours - signifying that cancer never sleeps.
The RV&WRL 24 hour Relay for Life event took place on the 4th-5th September where the teams, cancer survivors and their families gathered to celebrate their fundraising achievements of the past 9 months. Survivors took to the track first, followed by the committee and the other 32 teams taking part. There were team members on the track throughout the whole 24 hour period. Karen Mendoros, Chairman of RV&WRL, walked the track for 6 hours and confirmed that taking part in the challenge was a highly motivating and at times emotive experience and one that she wouldn’t have missed. Karen Weaving, Secretary of RV&WRL who chaired the Relay said “this total exceeds our wildest expectations. We know that this astounding amount of money will make a major contribution to research into childhood cancers and subsequently improve the quality of life of many Lancashire & Yorkshire families”.
The Ribble Valley Ladies was started in September 1998 by Karen & Malcolm Weaving, proprietors of the Stirk House Hotel in Gisburn with the aim to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and specifically for research into childhood cancers. This launch event raised £3,000 and signed up 400 members. Since then, fundraising has continued and in 2004 Karen and Malcolm moved to the Rendezvous Hotel in Skipton and the “Ribble Valley Ladies” attracted new members and followers from North Yorkshire to become the present day “Ribble Valley & White Rose Ladies”. By 2009 the RV&WRL had raised over £500,000 and felt in need of a new challenge that would embrace local communities and inspire them to join their cause. The total funds raised to date are over £650,000 which is a wonderful achievement for a very special cause.
As a result of this outstanding achievement, I have awarded the RV&WRL the High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Certificate in recognition of great and valuable services to the community.
New mentoring scheme launched
A NEW scheme aimed at improving the lives of youngsters in Lancashire was launched
on Monday 26th July 2010.
The EmpowerMent Initiative for Lancashire aims to establish a network of mentors that will work closely with young people across the county to promote opportunity and career development.
The project is initially aimed at young people aged 16-25 years but could be rolled out to include children as young as 14.
The mentors will be volunteers from professional backgrounds with a track record of success in their field of business.
The project will be spearheaded by the High Sheriff of Lancashire and is supported by the Princes Trust, Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Lancashire County Council, Lancashire’s Clubs for Young People, LANPAC and other partners.
The High Sheriff of Lancashire, Dennis G Mendoros, OBE, DL, FRAeS said: “We are very fortunate that in Lancashire we have a number of organisations that are committed to working in partnership to promote community initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of young people. I am delighted that so many organisations are supporting this new initiative and I am confident that EmpowerMent will compliment their work without duplication and, more importantly in a cost-efficient
way.”
Sue Littlefair, from the Princes Trust, said: “The Princes Trust is delighted to be chosen as a key partner in the High Sheriffs EmpowerMent initiative for Lancashire. It can only be good news as this development will help, support and give other positive opportunities to many more young people across
Burnley, Blackpool and
Lancaster.”
Mentors will offer two or three days a year to meet young people and talk about their challenges in getting to where they are today. They will also signpost the youngsters to any opportunities within the partner
organisations.
Burnley will be the pilot area for the scheme and it will then be rolled out to Blackpool and Lancaster.
Examples:
Matt Riley, Head of Daisy Communications, in June undertook a 45 minute question and answer session to a group of Princes Trust young potential entrepreneurs. He is a great supporter of the Trust and he is a silver patron.
13 young people from the Technical Engineering Development programme organised and developed by The Army and Princes Trust attended BCW Engineering in Burnley on the 14th of August and were shown around the factory to see how car parts etc were made. Alec Cassie the MD did a 30 minute speech and youngsters were encouraged to apply for vacancies.
