County News
2010/2011
Gloucestershire is a very diverse and vibrant county in both topography and people. During my year as High Sheriff I have made over 250 visits to organisations and events throughout the County, focusing particularly on voluntary groups.
By visiting, listening and, wherever possible, participating I have witnessed the work done by literally thousands of volunteers throughout the County.
The County is very varied. There are the Cotswolds in the east with lovely rolling hills and pretty stone villages nestling in valleys fed by beautiful streams such as the famous Windrush. The Royal Forest of Dean, in the west, is bounded by the rivers Severn and Wye and notable for its industrial past, roaming sheep and wild boar, together with the Verderers’ Court at Speech House. And in between we have the extensive and productive Severn Vale with Britain’s longest river, which has its source in Mid Wales where I was born. This part of the County also takes in the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire which is noted for its aero industries.
Gloucester is our only city, the County’s capital and is famous for its magnificent medieval cathedral which featured in the Harry Potter films and where I have spent a great deal of time. Close by is Cheltenham with its Regency architecture and the winner of Britain in Bloom competition.
So, what were the highlights of this wonderful year? Welcoming the Allied Rapid Response Corps to their base in Gloucester from Germany with a memorable and moving service in the Cathedral, including the fifteen nations that make up the Corps; visiting 1 Rifles at their HQ at Beachley before their deployment to Afghanistan; visiting all our prisons where there is so much good work being undertaken: these were amongst the most memorable events.
